Top Gun: Maverick

Over 30 years have passed and fans of the original “Top Gun” finally got the highly anticipated sequel, Top Gun: Maverick. Maverick is now a captain, test pilot, and one of the United States Navy’s top aviators; however, his constant insubordination has prevented him from becoming a flag officer. His rival-turned-friend Iceman, who is now a commander, has been able to protect him from being grounded. Maverick has to confront and embrace his past all while training the latest crop of young pilots, including his deceased best friend’s (Goose) son. Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer return to their original roles as Maverick and Iceman, respectively.

What do you get when (super) man’s best (super) friend is the only who can save the day? You have one determined dog who aims to save his companion from impending doom, while making friends along the way. After being subdued and abducted by an evil, hairless guinea pig wielding orange kryptonite, Superman’s fate is up to his dog, Krypto the Super-dog, who’s used to defeating the bad guys as a team. For once, he must harness his own strength and bravery to protect the ones he loves. DC League of Super-Pets stars Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Kate McKinnon, John Krasinski, and Keanu Reeves.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power

As the prequel of J.R.R Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power tackles the battle to save Middle-earth from being covered by a shroud of evil darkness thousands of years prior. New and familiar characters shape their destinies across epic journeys, adventures, and fantastical sceneries that readers and viewers have grown to love. Touting the distinction of being the most expensive TV series ever made, this Prime Video series showcases an ensemble of characters seeking to “choose not the path of fear, but that of faith.”

Rick and Morty

The exploits and explosive shenanigans of eccentric scientist Rick Sanchez and his hapless grandson, Morty, continues in season six of the series. Picking up where the last season ended, watchers can finally discover the fate of the dimensional travelers who were stranded in space at the bidding of Evil Morty. If you haven’t boarded the Rick and Morty yet, find time to catch up on seasons one through five now on Hulu. Otherwise, leap headfirst into the chaotic world of this oddly entertaining duo and prepare for the ride.

Prey, a Hulu Original, takes you back to 1719 to witness the origin story of the extraterrestrial race that has wreaked havoc on humanity since the Predator’s franchise 1987 inception. After the uninvited visitors touches down on the land of the Comanche Nation, a young warrior named Naru battles with the highly intelligent and evolved alien in this prequel. She quickly realizes she must watch and learn the moves of her enemy if she has any chance of defeating it. Amber Midthunder takes a star turn as Naru, the story’s hero. The film’s director, Dan Trachtenberg, shot the film in both English and Comanche, with both available on Hulu.

Much like Jordan Peele’s “Get Out” and “Us,” his take on Nope offers an air of mystery around two siblings seeking answers surrounding the untimely, albeit weird death of their father. Thinking that perhaps it was the result of extraterrestrial interference, the duo set out to capture a suspected UFO on camera (along with fame and fortune) with the help of a decorated videographer, and a Fry’s video installation guy. However, will the group discover far more than what they bargained for? The movie stars Daniel Kaluuya, Keke Palmer, Steven Yeun, and Keith David.

Thor: Love and Thunder

Even the gods aren’t safe from death in Thor: Love and Thunder. Thor, now a member of the Guardians of the Galaxy, parts ways with the group and partners with his original ragtag team of heroes (i.e., Valkyrie and Korg) to stop a blood-thirsty Gorr, who feels wronged by the gods after the untimely death of his daughter, Love. Thor learns that his next target is New Asgard, so he returns home to find that his ex-girlfriend, Jane Foster, is now wielding his hammer (Mjolnir). She joins the fight to bring Gorr down and put a stop to his rampage. The all-star MCU cast stars Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Tessa Thompson, Taika Waititi, Christian Bale, and Russell Crowe, just to name a few.

Cobra Kai

Fans of the “Karate Kid” franchise quickly took to this comedy-drama series that takes place nearly 35 years after Johnny Lawrence is defeated by the series protagonist, Daniel Russo. Johnny reopens the Cobra Kai dojo in support of a bullied teenage neighbor and other teens with similar troubles, taking on a similar role as Mr. Miyagi did with a teenage Daniel. Across the last four seasons, we’ve seen twists and turns within the dojo, championships, and the deeply rooted relationship between Daniel and Johnny. The drama continues with the premiere of its fifth season. Cobra Kai stars Ralph Macchio and William Zabka in their original roles.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners

Based on the video game “Cyberpunk 2077,” Cyberpunk: Edgerunner introduces us to a street kid of the future who is just trying to survive. In an ultra fast-paced world riddled with a general obsession of body-modifications and a complete reliance on technology, he realizes he must become a mercenary outlaw, or an edgerunner, if he is to live in a dystopian world teeming with corruption and cybernetic implants. This highly anticipated Netflix original, standalone anime series has 10 episodes.
